"The Book of Negros & 1965 in Black and White"

Last week I had the pleasure of going to a viewing of BET’s new mini series called “The Book of Negros”. The miniseries will premiere on 2/16 at 8pm/ 7pm ct; it is a three part series. The miniseries is based off the award winning novel by Lawrence Hill. It stars Aunjanue Ellis as the main character Aminata Diallo and features Cuba Gooding Jr. and Louis Gossett Jr.  The mini is the story of Aunjanue’s character Aminata’s journey as a slave to a free woman. What makes this story or series different from others is that it is told from a woman’s point of view. It also shows the strength, courage and knowledge it took to stay alive during times of slavery. The journey begins when Aminata is kidnapped as a child and then is sold as a slave in America. She later becomes an aid for the British troops during the Revolutionary War. As a free woman, she and others fled to Nova Scotia for safety after the war. She eventually returns to Africa, where things are very different from when she once left as a girl. That is a very brief description of the series. I hope this has gathered your interest; I’m trying to leave out a lot of details so I don’t give the whole story away. The acting and directing in this series is amazing. Please be sure to catch it on 2/16-2/18 on BET at 8pm.

I also got a chance to go to the opening of "Freedom Journey 1965" a photo exhibit at the Museum of Natural History  by Stephen Somerstein
The photo exhibit features photos of the civil rights movement during 1965 in Selma, Alabama. As seen in the movie SELMA, you can see the march to the Capitol  and the march to Selma. The photos not only capture many pioneers of the Civil Rights movement but also the towns people in Selma who participated.

The opening of the exhibit took place on January 15,2015.  Before viewing the photo we got to hear a lovely speech from activist Harry Belafonte. He spoke on what it was like during that time period and how we need to stay educated on politics and whats going on in other areas of the world.
