"Don't Waste Your Pretty"
.jpg)
Don't waste your pretty... as Demetria Lucas D'Oyley says " Is your energy, emotional investment , time, listening skills, nurturing, sex, sacrifices, cheer leading, hand-holding, confidence and more. These are the resources that women often take for granted and give away to the wrong people while dating and in the wrong relationships."- from her book titled Don't Waste Your Pretty: The Go-to- Guide for Making Smart Decisions in Life & Love.
Demetria Lucas D'Oyley is a award winning author, life coach and blogger. She is also a star cast member of Bravo's hit TV show called Blood, Sweat and Heels that airs Sundays at 9:00 pm. The recently married author spoke about how she became a critically acclaimed writer of her blog A Belle in Brooklyn and her time at Essence Magazine. In between writing A Belle in Brooklyn: The Go to Guide for Living Your Best Single Life and Don't Waste Your Pretty: The Go to Guide for Making Smart Decisions in Life & Love she is the founder of a life- coaching boutique style service Coached By Belle. Demetria is currently on a nationwide book tour to promote her second book Don't Waste Your Pretty : The Go to Guide for Making Smart Decisions in Life & Love. She also contributes to numerous publications and various talk shows in regards to relationships. Many have said she is the black Carrie Bradshaw!
I had the pleasure of hearing Demetria speak about her new book, love, life, professions and more at a event I attended last week called "Don't Waste Your Pretty". The event was put on by ColorComm at the Inglot Cosmetics Studios here in New York. While at the event we had wonderful refreshments provided by Jose Cuervo and Good Eats Cupcakes. My friend that accompanied me to the event got her hair styled at the Braid Bar by Swivel Beauty ( a new hair styling app to recommend stylists in your area). Also we both got a chance to purchase Demetria's book and got it autographed. Here are a few pictures from the event and the Inglot Cosmetics ( a great cosmetic line if you're not familiar with them) studios in Chelsea Market.

"The Book of Negros & 1965 in Black and White"

Last week I had the pleasure of going to a viewing of BET’s new mini series called “The Book of Negros”. The miniseries will premiere on 2/16 at 8pm/ 7pm ct; it is a three part series. The miniseries is based off the award winning novel by Lawrence Hill. It stars Aunjanue Ellis as the main character Aminata Diallo and features Cuba Gooding Jr. and Louis Gossett Jr. The mini is the story of Aunjanue’s character Aminata’s journey as a slave to a free woman. What makes this story or series different from others is that it is told from a woman’s point of view. It also shows the strength, courage and knowledge it took to stay alive during times of slavery. The journey begins when Aminata is kidnapped as a child and then is sold as a slave in America. She later becomes an aid for the British troops during the Revolutionary War. As a free woman, she and others fled to Nova Scotia for safety after the war. She eventually returns to Africa, where things are very different from when she once left as a girl. That is a very brief description of the series. I hope this has gathered your interest; I’m trying to leave out a lot of details so I don’t give the whole story away. The acting and directing in this series is amazing. Please be sure to catch it on 2/16-2/18 on BET at 8pm.

The photo exhibit features photos of the civil rights movement during 1965 in Selma, Alabama. As seen in the movie SELMA, you can see the march to the Capitol and the march to Selma. The photos not only capture many pioneers of the Civil Rights movement but also the towns people in Selma who participated.
(some of the photos from the exhibit)

The opening of the exhibit took place on January 15,2015. Before viewing the photo we got to hear a lovely speech from activist Harry Belafonte. He spoke on what it was like during that time period and how we need to stay educated on politics and whats going on in other areas of the world.
