"The Book of Negros & 1965 in Black and White"

Last week I had the pleasure of going to a viewing of BET’s new mini series called “The Book of Negros”. The miniseries will premiere on 2/16 at 8pm/ 7pm ct; it is a three part series. The miniseries is based off the award winning novel by Lawrence Hill. It stars Aunjanue Ellis as the main character Aminata Diallo and features Cuba Gooding Jr. and Louis Gossett Jr.  The mini is the story of Aunjanue’s character Aminata’s journey as a slave to a free woman. What makes this story or series different from others is that it is told from a woman’s point of view. It also shows the strength, courage and knowledge it took to stay alive during times of slavery. The journey begins when Aminata is kidnapped as a child and then is sold as a slave in America. She later becomes an aid for the British troops during the Revolutionary War. As a free woman, she and others fled to Nova Scotia for safety after the war. She eventually returns to Africa, where things are very different from when she once left as a girl. That is a very brief description of the series. I hope this has gathered your interest; I’m trying to leave out a lot of details so I don’t give the whole story away. The acting and directing in this series is amazing. Please be sure to catch it on 2/16-2/18 on BET at 8pm.

I also got a chance to go to the opening of "Freedom Journey 1965" a photo exhibit at the Museum of Natural History  by Stephen Somerstein
The photo exhibit features photos of the civil rights movement during 1965 in Selma, Alabama. As seen in the movie SELMA, you can see the march to the Capitol  and the march to Selma. The photos not only capture many pioneers of the Civil Rights movement but also the towns people in Selma who participated.

The opening of the exhibit took place on January 15,2015.  Before viewing the photo we got to hear a lovely speech from activist Harry Belafonte. He spoke on what it was like during that time period and how we need to stay educated on politics and whats going on in other areas of the world.

Seasons Greetings!!!

Happy Holidays!!! I hope everyone is enjoying time with loved ones, all the food and festivities. Like the title of this post SEASONS GREETING, this post is about welcoming the new seasons that are coming our way in this new year. Whether you want to make a change about yourself or be more focused this coming year, it's all up to you. We all have things we want to do differently but lets try and keep it to ourselves i.e. (NO FACEBOOK POST ABOUT THE NEW YOU) you said the same things last year. We have to hold ourselves more accountable before we expect others to. Nobody can do anything for you because they don't want the satisfaction and results as much as you do because they don't understand your reasoning behind it. Like most people a lot of us have typical goals like: lose weight, eat healthy, save more money. Usually these last for like a few weeks or month. Lets be different !!! How about, I'm going to: TRAVEL , TRY NEW FOODS, FIND A NEW HOBBY, FIND A MENTOR OR BE A MENTOR... etc.

If you're very indecisive like me, you can  take slips of paper and write down bunch of things you want to do in life. Please do not limit yourself to a year. Put all your ideas in a jar and every month pick out a slip and go do that thing. Be sure to save that slip so you can later write down your favorite part of that activity or idea so you can look back on it. This is my twist on a memory jar. (A memory jar is where you write down moments that you enjoyed/ don't want to forget throughout your year. Place them in a jar and at the end of the year you sit and read everything that's in your jar.) You'll look back and think I can't believe I did all of that!!! I will be doing the same and sharing my different experiences with you all here on my blog, don't hate me if I don't have a post everyday. I do have a full time job...sorry in advance lol.

I went ahead and made my own jar (pictured below). As a fun group activity, you can invite friends over and have a jar making party/ get together with drinks. It took me 10 mins to make my jar, very simple. I cut out a few things from a magazine and taped it to my jar for decoration. ( You can make/decorate your jar if you want, not necessary. Also you can use any type of paper you want to write your goals/ adventures on.)

Supplies: 2 glass jars (used pasta sauce jars)
Magazines
 Tape, Scissors
  Post-It notes

"Just like the puzzle pieces, I'm adding new
pieces everyday to complete my puzzle
LIFE"

INSPIRED: A series that discovers beauty through inspiration.

***Tip: I write on the back of the post it note so that way it's easier to stick together (pictured on the left). Also I used the bigger jar as my pull jar ( middle picture). On the left above it the picture of my first memory for 2015!! You can add ideas to the jar as often as you would like!!

I hope you enjoyed this post and will possibly make your own jars. Live 2015 without restrictions...more love and laughter!!!

I'll Be There Soon...

Hey Everyone!!! I know I've been gone for a while. I got caught up in the Concrete Jungle lifestyle and adventures, but I will be back to blogging soon. As of now I'm in the process of reconstructing my blog and making a schedule so I can post more often and document all of the different things I've been  doing here in New York. I have been doing soo much that I need to take time and put it all down for ya. I plan to have more style posts, diy projects,  product reviews, and whatever else I'm getting myself into. I pray you'll bare with me through this process and love what it is to come!

" It's very easy to get caught in the craziness that comes with the city but sometimes you have to step back and take a moment to breathe and appreciate it's beauty from afar."

A little glimpse of sunshine after a rainy day.

I love the little block I live on. I was walking down my street and saw this little red balloon. When I came back it was gone. Maybe taken by the wind to a new destination. I wonder who will be next to stop in its tracks.
